The rail transportation industry is quickly evolving. The mandate by the federal government for the implementation of Positive Train Control (PTC) by 2018 has forced the industry to hasten its work to network enable and enhance monitoring and control of all aspects of their operations. PacStar develops and manufactures hardware and software solutions to enable enhanced networking capabilities from the network operations center to the wayside bungalows, and to onboard the trains.

  • Wayside Bungalow Networking
    When a rail transportation company must connect thousands of wayside bungalows to a network, security, ease of management, and reliability of the equipment is critical. PacStar provides routers, switches and servers to enable secure communications between the wayside bungalows and the network operations center. PacStar also offers small form factor servers to host any number of application software packages for network traffic analysis, virtual routing, firewalls and video surveillance.

  • Positive Train Control
    As a result of the Positive Train Control mandate from the U.S. federal government, trains are becoming moving network operations centers. Onboard train networking equipment must communicate with wayside equipment or to operational network infrastructure reliably and securely with a low level of latency. Additionally, all onboard network equipment must be compact and able to operate in a harsh environments with a high degree of reliability. PacStar network routers, switches, and servers are small form factor, are designed for “dirty/unreliable” power conditions, and have been tested and approved to MIL-STDs for continuous operation in environments involving extreme temperatures, shock and vibration.
